Box of Books

Students attending OCC this fall will be able to pick up all the textbooks and supporting materials they need in one convenient package, at a reduced price. You will also be able to purchase a Chromebook at the same time for an additional $250 if you choose. If you’re eligible for financial aid, you can use it towards the purchase of the textbooks and Chromebook, or you can apply for a scholarship to help cover the costs.  

OCC wants to make it easier and more affordable for you to get all of your textbooks and a computer in one convenient place. We are proud to introduce the Box of Books program at the Bookstore to get you ready for class this fall.

Steps to get your Box of Books

  1. Register for Classes (if you haven't already)
  2. Confirm your Box of Books with the Bookstore online.
    • Your Username is your OCC email address
    • Your Password is your Student ID
    • You will need a credit or debit card to secure your order. No payment will be necessary at the time of securing your box of books! Textbook costs are included in your student account.
  3. Pickup your box of books during your designated time: 
    • You can pick up your order after you receive notification its ready.

Need a new computer too?  

When you pick up your Box of Books, you can purchase a Dell Inspiron Chromebook 11 for an additional cost of $250.  This additional cost will be applied to your student account.  

This product is a streamlined, Chrome-browser-only laptop computer with an Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of memory.  The Chromebook is designed to work with web-based, cloud-hosted services, and will support students’ access to course materials in Blackboard, updates and alerts in Lazer Success, and documents and materials in Office 365.  Students may use Office 365 and/or Google Documents and will have ample capacity for both storage and sharing. 

Book Return Info for Spring 2020 Semester

Due to the move towards online classes on many campuses, we want to reassure all of our rental customers we are here to support you. Therefore, we have extended the Rental Return due date to June 15th.  If you are not on campus and have rented textbooks, they can be returned free by shipping back via UPS. Full instructions are available at https://onondagacc.bncollege.com/shop/onondaga-cc/page/rental-book-return You will need your order number to print the UPS shipping label. This can be found in the confirmation email from your online order OR if you rented your textbook in store, find it in any of your rental reminder emails. The UPS label can be printed on or before your Charge Date

We hope to be back in the store by mid-May, though we are following the guidelines of the College.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Box of Books program simplifies the process of gathering your textbooks for each semester and does so at a substantial discount for students. 

No! Students currently pay nearly $82 per textbook, and many courses require more than one textbook.  With Box of Books, you'll only pay $64.50 for all of your books in a 3-credit course.

How it works

The Box of Books project allows the College’s Bookstore partner, Barnes & Noble College, to purchase materials for all courses in bulk, significantly reducing prices to students.  Students will be billed $21.50 per course credit ($64.50 per 3-credit course, $86 per 4-credit course) to their student account for required textbooks/codes. 

If you choose to add a Chromebook to your Box of Books, you'll be charged an additional $250.  In most cases, your financial aid will cover the cost of your Box of Books and Chromebook.

OER courses are exempt from the $21.50 per course credit fee.  All other credits in which a student is enrolled will carry the $21.50 fee, regardless of whether a textbook is required.  Students who do not benefit financially from this arrangement have the right to opt out of the program and purchase their textbooks individually.

You can choose to not purchase a Chromebook.

You may return the book to the Bookstore on the same terms and timelines currently in place.  If you drop a class and enroll in a different class, the bookstore will “swap” the required textbooks/codes so that you have what you need.  

Barnes & Noble has a supply chain and fulfillment plan in place that should allow you to receive your books within 48 hours of registration.

Book orders will be fulfilled in the discretion of the Bookstore with a combination of new, used, rental, and digital products based on each student’s individual course selection.  Rental products must be returned at the end of the semester consistent with current policies and procedures and will be recirculated in future years that the same materials are used.  This means that in general you will need to place a credit card or debit card on file with the Bookstore prior to book pick up.  The credit/debit card will not be charged unless the you fail to return the rental materials at the end of the semester.  Students who cannot provide a credit or debit card will be assisted on a case-by-case basis.  

Chromebooks become the property of each student and do not need to be returned.
