K-12 Partner Information

Please note that all SUNY OCC employees that are deemed non-essential will be working remotely until April 30th. At that time, an assessment will occur to see if operations can resume. If you need to contact someone, please call or email the relevant party.

K-12 & School District Partners Information

March 17, 2020 Update

Dear School District and K-12 Partners,

I am writing today with an update regarding operations at OCC. Starting today (Tuesday) at noon, OCC is transitioned to remote operations with most staff members working away from campus. Please note the following updates:

  1. College staff are working remotely and will continue to communicate with you via email and phone. Staff will be monitoring their email and voicemails and will respond to you. This will occur at least through March 31st. This timeline applies to staff only. For OCC classes – see #2.
  2. College faculty and students are on Spring Break this week. On Monday, March 23rd, classes will transition to alternate formats such as distance learning, alternative assignments, and online communication. Office hours will only be available remotely due to social distancing requirements. As stated on 3/12 (below), classes will operate this way through at least April 10th. OCC is committed to communicating by April 6th if there are any extensions to this timeframe.
  3. Please know that we recognize that not all students have access to WiFi and/or a computer. We are also aware that school districts have also been taking steps to address this, though obviously capacity can be limited. If you have students who you know do not have any online access and they are enrolled in College Credit Now courses or college courses on-campus at OCC, please let us know and we will communicate this to faculty.
  4. College faculty will be communicating directly to students about their assignments and arrangements for office hours. If at all possible, please remind students again to regularly check their OCC email and Blackboard so that they can remain up-to-date. If there are issues with accessing these tools that you are aware of, please reach out and we will connect our Help Desk to your students.
  5. OCC’s College Credit Now staff will be reaching out to your teachers who teach concurrent enrollment courses for OCC as well as their faculty mentors, with additional information.

Clearly, this is an evolving situation that we’re all working to manage. We thank you for everything you are doing for your students, including our own children who attend your schools, to help them through this extraordinary time. If we can be of any assistance at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ve included our contact information again below.

Thank you,

March 12, 2020 Update

As you might expect, OCC has been receiving questions about the status of high school students, including P-Tech, Smart Scholars, and Early College students, attending courses at OCC based on the announcements that occurred yesterday. As one of 64 SUNY campuses around the state, OCC is taking its guidance from SUNY, as well as from local and state health authorities. As such, based on the guidance that is advising containment, limited group gatherings, and social distancing, OCC President Casey Crabill announced the following today:

  1. OCC is on Spring Break next week, March 16th to the 20th. For the two weeks following Spring Break, through April 10th, OCC will not hold in-person class meetings. This means that OCC faculty will identify alternative means for coursework to occur, which can include distance learning, alternate assignments, online offerings, and phone calls. OCC faculty will communicate class information to their students.
  2. We are asking your assistance with three items: 1) Please make sure your students understand how and to frequently check OCC email. This method will be used to communicate with them. 2) Please make sure your students understand how and to frequently check Blackboard, OCC’s online learning classroom. This method is very frequently used already in classes, even for those not online, and will be even more important now. 3) If they do not know how to do either of these things, please tell them to reach out to OCC’s Help Desk at (315) 498-2999 or to contact their OCC liaison for assistance (contact information below). Alternatively, reach out to me and I will make sure they’re connected.
  3. For courses that include labs, studios, or other traditional in-person modalities, faculty are developing options and alternatives to meet learning outcomes. These arrangements will be communicated by faculty to students.
  4. Concurrent enrollment courses, offered in the high school, will continue to be offered as usual according to your schedule.
  5. OCC remains open for business and on-campus services such as the Library, Learning Center, Dining Center, Computer Labs, etc., will be open and offices will be staffed. There may be changes made to the configurations of the spaces to accommodate social distancing needs. In addition, expanded services such as increased online tutoring services are being arranged.
  6. In-person classes will not be held so students should not transport to campus for class. Students are welcome to come to campus to utilize services such as the Library, Learning Center, Computer Labs, etc. In addition, faculty will be making arrangements for office hours, which may be online, by phone, or if necessary as individual meetings, so that students can continue to access their professors.
  7. Campus events for groups larger than 50 people will be cancelled or postponed until a later date.
  8. Students who require learning accommodations will be serviced through the Office of Accessibility Resources, who are also working with faculty.
  9. By April 6th, OCC will make a decision regarding activities beyond April 10th.

Clearly this is an evolving situation and we recognize that school districts are engaging in similar conversations and decision-making. Above all, we stand ready to work with you and your students to ensure that needs are accommodated, learning continues to occur, and we work together as partners through the scenarios that are sure to be presented. We will continue to communicate with you as well as through our website, www.sunyocc.edu/coronavirus

I have provided my contact information and those of several team members below. Please don’t hesitate to reach out as needed.

Sincerely,
Amy Kremenek
